Wondering how to advance gift conversations, approach your capital campaign planning, or perhaps steward just a bit differently? Then you won’t want to miss our upcoming August Chapter Meeting: What is changing (and staying the same) in Fundraising.Join us for a dynamic, interactive conversation moderated by Shaleiah Fox with three of our most recent Philanthropy Day Outstanding Professional Fundraisers of the Year: Angela Osborn, CFRE, CFRM; Llyas Salahud-Din, CNP; and Charley Scarborough, CFP™, CFRE. With 50 years of fundraising experience and hundreds of millions of dollars raised between them (including successful capital campaigns during a pandemic), this all-star panel will discuss their path to fundraising, lessons learned, and personal experiences with donors. You’ll leave this engaging with practical advice on how to advance your work!

Moderator:

Shaleiah Fox: Shaleiah is an advocate & philanthropist who’s worked to turn her personal story in the foster care system into positivity, give voice to community, and create spaces for equitable access to success for the underrepresented and marginalized. She holds master's degrees in social work & public administration and policy. Shaleiah serves as Thinkery's Chief Advancement Officer and brings 10+ years of experience in fundraising, executive leadership, and business development in the public and private sectors to Thinkery. She co-founded Fresh Chefs Society, a local nonprofit that spent nearly a decade empowering young people in the foster care system through food, and prior to joining Thinkery, built fundraising operations for the Black Studies Collective at UT Austin. Shaleiah believes deeply in showing up in the place she calls home and serves on boards & committees of community-serving institutions supporting young and future leaders in Austin. A committed partner & mother of two, her heart & life are full.

Panelists:  

Angela Osborn, CFRE, CFRM: Angela has 20 years' experience in the nonprofit professional fundraising field. She is a recent alum of the Leadership Austin Essential Program and is a long-time member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. In 2008, Angela chaired AFP's Philanthropy Day and has served on AFP's board as Director of Communications, VP of Membership, Director of Strategic Planning, Treasurer, Secretary and, in 2017, as President. Committed to the Austin community, she serves on I Live Here, I Give Here's NPO Advisory Council, SFC and Avance Austin's Development Committee and is the Sustaining Advisor to the FIT (Food in Tummies) program for the Junior League of Austin. Philanthropy has been important to Angela since she was a small child serving holiday meals to the homeless, giving gifts to a family in need during the holidays, and organizing fundraisers in support of charities. When she is not working, Angela loves spending time with her husband, two daughters and their rescue dog, running/exploring Town Lake or the other trails, learning a new style of dance, traveling or staying at home hosting friends and family.

Llyas Salahud-din: Llyas’s drive for philanthropy stems from being a foster kid for 15 years, which inspired him to become a Certified Nonprofit Professional (CNP).  Llyas is a 2013 Leadership Austin Essential Alum, a 2017 Austin Area Research Organization (AAROW) McBee Fellow, and in 2021, was awarded Austin Association of Fundraising Professional’s (AFP) Fundraiser of The Year.  Llyas’s first success at fundraising was with United Way in Greater San Antonio, where he worked as a Loaned Executive with a team that raised 44M for the community. Later in his career, he was instrumental in implementing a multi-year giving model for the End Youth Homelessness campaign at LifeWorks, and later at Make-A-Wish Central & South Texas.  Currently, Llyas’s strategies helped Texas Empowerment Academy implement a new Development Department, while also growing their fundraising from zero to a few million. Recently, he completed the school’s 33M Capital Campaign, which will be the largest Education investment in the Austin, Texas African- American Community since 1881. 

Charley Scarborough, CFP ™, CFRE: A “recovering banker” with a heart for helping, Charley Scarborough brings two careers worth of experience to fundraising leadership. Charley serves as Vice President for Institutional Advancement at the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest since early 2020, leading the team to recent completion of a record-setting, $20M capital campaign while increasing annual giving over 35%.

Charley has served over 100 nonprofit organizations across Texas as principal and founder of Scarborough & Associates, nonprofit consulting. Before founding Scarborough & Associates, he served as Chief Philanthropy & Engagement Officer for Mission Capital and for 15 years prior to that, Charley raised funds for Ascension Seton Healthcare in Central Texas. As Executive Director of the Seton Fund, he led professional and volunteer teams, participating in over a dozen capital campaigns, events and grant development, personally responsible for over $150M in philanthropy revenue during his tenure.

Charley’s 20+ years of nonprofit leadership experience is balanced by a long career as a trust officer and financial advisor in the banking and finance industry. Mr. Scarborough graduated from Texas Christian University and has achieved certifications as Certified Financial Planner (CFP ™) and Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE). Recognized as AFP Austin’s Outstanding Professional Fundraiser of the Year 2022, his volunteer service has included the Seton Cove, Wonders & Worries, Association of Fundraising Professionals Austin, Grants Professionals Association of Austin, Toastmasters and served as a Big Brother. Charley has spoken at numerous conferences and workshops on nonprofit topics from capital campaigns to strategic planning – often utilizing his artist’s creativity to engage and entertain audiences.
